“I am hopeful that having an alternate route of administration will decrease hesitancy and improve the likelihood that patients experiencing anaphylaxis will receive epinephrine when it’s needed,” J. Andrew Bird, M.D., FAAP, chair of the AAP Section on Allergy and Immunology, said of the new epinephrine nasal spray.https://bit.ly/4df*ckyl

Moving forward, we may be able to use ceftazidime in such patient population, which appears to be cheaper and as well tolerated as aztreonam. Read the full article here on Clinical Therapeutics.

Preexisting Allergic Disease May Increase Risk for Long COVIDSystematic literature review identifies increased risk but with very low certaintyPreexisting asthma or rhinitis may increase the risk for long COVID (LC), according to a review published online Nov. 8 inClinical & Experimental Allergy.Doreen Wolff, from the University of Magdeburg in Germany, and colleagues conducted a systematic literature review to examine the epidemiological evidence on allergic diseases as risk factors for LC.Based on 13 studies (9,967 participants; range, 39 to 1,950 per study), the researchers found that the evidence supported a possible relationship between LC and allergy but was very uncertain. The proportion of people with LC ranged from 11 to 90 percent. In hospital-based populations (six studies; 4,019 participants), the researchers found preexisting asthma measured may be associated with an increased risk for LC (odds ratio, 1.94), with very low certainty. Findings were similar for preexisting rhinitis (three studies; 1,141 participants; odds ratio, 1.96), with very low certainty. All studies had a high risk for bias due to population selection and methods used to ascertain the exposures and the outcome.Larry Cole

Asthma and allergic rhinitis are highly prevalent chronic inflammatory diseases of the respiratory tract. At present, diagnosis is largely based on the patient's medical history, physical examination, and in vivo IgE tests, although in vitro tests have found their way into routine allergy diagnostics. Polysensitization is frequent, and in vitro IgE assays, particularly those based on allergen components, provide additional useful information. The later offer the possibility of distinguishing between genuine sensitization and cross-reactivity. Sensitization against animal dander is 1 of the major risk factors for the development of asthma and/or allergic rhinitis. Polysensitization and higher sIgE levels against animal-derived allergens are linked to severe forms of asthma. The HDM-derived allergenic molecules Der p 1 and Der p 2 are highly associated with asthma and allergic rhinitis symptoms.CRD is widely used in allergic rhinitis and asthma cases and in the diagnosis of most of the other IgE-mediated allergic diseases (e.g., in patients with allergy to peanut, egg, milk, wheat, latex, insect venom, etc.).#allergy #diagnostics #CRD #nanotechnology #microarray

Symptoms of allergic disease in young children are generally unspecific and the diagnosis without objective tests could be an arbitrary process. The paediatric section of the European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology has recently published a position paper with recommendations on allergy testing in children to improve the identification of allergy and quality of care. The present studies shows that Phadiatop Infant has a diagnostic performance with a high sensitivity and specificity. Phadiatop could be recommended as a complement to the clinical information in the differential diagnosis on IgE-mediated disease in young children with allergy-like symptoms. Furthermore, the test could be useful in assisting primary care physicians in selecting atopic children at an early stage for further intervention or referral to an allergist.#allergy #allergyprevention #phadiatop #allergydiagnosis

We often field the question, "How can I tell if it's anaphylaxis?" The American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology - AAAAI now provides a free web-based learning tool that steps you through recognizing the symptoms of anaphylaxis and provides various scenarios illustrating reactions. THIS IS A MUST-SEE IF YOU HAVE FOOD ALLERGIES OR CARE FOR SOMEONE WHO DOES. It's also a great tool to share with family and friends to help educate them as well.https://lnkd.in/eegNkhJs

Nasal congestion is a common allergy symptom. Many of us rely on over-the-counter decongestants to help us relieve nasal congestion. Using nasal sprays containing the drug, phenylephrine, instead of in pill or liquid form is helpful in treating symptoms but make sure not to take it for more than a few days. To learn more about nasal congestion and medications, we sat down with Dr. Bill Berger MD, MBA, a board-certified allergist/immunologist expert, to delve into the understanding of nasal congestion medications, on an Ask the Allergist video in collaboration with the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI). https://lnkd.in/eE6mp5f5
